Our History

José Pedro Barreira Group is a family business holder of a vast land estate and dedicated to livestock, forestry and agricultural activities. The company was founded in April 9, 1970 by António Barreira supported by a half century family heritage. It started then with the name “Companhia Agrícola do Maranhão – Camar”. Only 4 years after its creation, the Portuguese land reform occurred and all the company’s heritage was expropriated. In the next two decades, José Pedro Barreira was fully determined and committed in regaining the lost heritage. In 1989 began the vacancy of Herdade de Camões and in 1992 the societies of Monte Ruivo, Ameixeira, Covada and Tojeirinha were formed, which largely correspond to the current assets of the José Pedro Barreira Group.

In the 1990s the Group invested in the infrastructure’s recovery, namely in the modernization and intensification of irrigated areas. By then there was also a focus on cereal production and cattle breeding. More recently the strategy involved intensifying livestock activity and diversifying with olive groves plantation.

During that period, there was always a special concern with the forest area, especially with the revival of the cork oak forests (montado) and with the investment in new plantations like cork and pine.

When one talks about this Group history, Casa Barreira must always be included since both share the same origin. Casa Barreira is one of the largest national companies in
the agroforestry sector and José Pedro Barreira Group is one of its reference shareholders.

If we add the assets directly managed by us to our participation in Casa Barreira, our Group becomes one of the major players of this sector.
